Hearing Protection

For centuries our culture has been immersed in noise. We are consistently exposed to dangerous noise levels, from enjoying hobbies like concerts and live shows to working in factories for manufacturing or construction. We have known for many decades that excessive noise over time is damaging to our hearing, which is why it’s become pertinent to protect this sense.

Hearing loss is a medical condition and can profoundly impact your daily life. We use cellphones, radios, televisions and other devices more than any generation before, all of which require clear hearing to understand and enjoy fully. Most of all, the top complaint among individuals with hearing loss is the inability to hear normal conversations.

Hearing protection products

The devices that protect hearing are divided into roughly two groups: earphones and earplugs. As the names suggest, the former is worn outside the ear and the latter inside. They come in many styles to best suit their diverse uses and configurations. Some are used for general situations and some are specialized. Here are the main types of hearing protection available today:

Earmolds

Earmolds are plastic impressions of your ear used to hold a hearing aid or protective device. The soft mold material is placed in the ear, and a cast is made of this from harder material. Each earmold has an ear canal hole for the device.

Shooting

Electronic hearing protectors have been developed to close a valve instantly upon receiving concussive and explosive soundwaves. The valve is open to normal sound until such an event occurs. They are specifically designed to stop the vibrations of a gunshot and then open to allow the wearer to hear most sounds as usual.

Swimming

Swimming and diving can severely injure the ear. Earplugs made specifically for swimming can be custom molded to your ears. There are also over-the-counter swimming earplugs available. Divers are particularly susceptible to ear damage from pressure at lower depths. Earplugs designed to prevent this damage are custom fit.

Musicians

While everyone working in loud musical entertainment environments like concert halls should wear hearing protection, musicians are particularly susceptible to long periods of loud noise. However, they must also be able to follow every beat and hear the musical notes. Musicians’ hearing protectors, or monitors, allow frequencies and volumes to reach the eardrum but protect against the loudest decibel levels.

Bluetooth ear protectors

Many jobs in noisy industries require people to be in constant communication while using hearing protection. Radio-equipped earphones running Bluetooth allow speaking and listening at normal volumes, even in the middle of a loud work site.
